Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American performer and actress. Her performance as a singer, music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has garnered her two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won a Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. as a police officer as well as Rita instructor of Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of 10. Latifah, who was born and brought up in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Latifah is a word that means gentle and kind. Her mother gave it to her at the age of eight years old. Latifah was always tall and tall. Standing 5'10", she was the center forward on her high school basketball team. She sang the song home from The musical The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah was a beatboxer in the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was a part of the original Flavor Unit group, made up of several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The song was sent to host Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song, and then signed Latifah in 1988 for the release of her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
